Well, have we got some book recommendations for you!
Get ready to ROAR…
- We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins – Penelope Rex is starting kindergarten, and she’s got a case of the first day jitters. When she gets to school, she’s surprised. All of her classmates are CHILDREN. Turns out, children are delicious. Penelope’s attempts to fit in and make friends are hilarious. This is one of the funniest children’s books of all time. (Check out the entire Penelope series. The newest book – We Don’t Lose Our Class Goldfish – is coming out March 2023, and we can’t wait to read it!)

- Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman – Tiny wants to give his friend Pointy a hug to cheer him up. But it’s not easy to hug when you have tiny arms. This doesn’t deter Tiny. He will ask for advice, plan out a strategy, practice, and finally give Pointy a hug. The interplay between words and pictures dial up the humor quotient in this book. They’re funny on their own, but together, they’re even better. (Tiny also has his own series, 4 books and counting. Also highly recommended.)
- Stegothesaurus by Bridget Heos – Stegothesaurus is different from his brothers. He loves words. And this is just fine, until an allosaurus lurks in the bushes. His brothers prudently run away, but Stegothesaurus is too busy thinking of words to describe the danger: f-f-frightening, formidable, fearsome. This clever, jocular, side-splitting story will definitely make you roar. It will also build readers’ vocabulary. (You guessed it … this also has a sequel: Triceratopposite, who does the opposite of what he’s told to do.)

- T. Rex Time Machine by Jared Chapman – Two T. rexes chase a time traveler (who wasn’t much meat), follow their noses into his empty time machine, and accidentally get transported to the future. The future is pretty awesome (“The food comes to us!”) … until it isn’t. Warning: this riotous fish-out-of-water comedy of errors may bring on a case of the munchies. (And yes, check out the sequel, T. Rex Time Machine: Dinos in De-Nile, which may be even funnier.)
- Tyrannosaurus Rex vs. Edna, the Very First Chicken by Douglas Rees – Everyone is terrified of the voracious Tyrannosaurus rex, who WANTS HIS BREAKFAST … everyone except Edna. Tyrannosaurus may have mighty claws and terrible jaws, but Edna has a mighty beak and terrible flapping wings! The witty & ironic character twist – a brave chicken – will have you in stitches. (Wait … this book doesn’t have a sequel? How is that even possible?)
- Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: as retold by Mo Willems – A ludicrously playful twist on the classic fairytale, featuring dinosaurs that suspiciously look like T. rexes. Once upon a time, three dinosaurs – a papa dinosaur, a mama dinosaur, and a dinosaur visiting from Norway – just happened to tidy their house and make pudding and go … someplace else. They were definitely not setting a trap for a succulent little girl! This one could only have come from the inventively brilliant Mo Willems. (No sequel either? But wait…)

- Edwina, the Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems – another hysterical dinosaur story from Mr. Willems. Everyone in town loves Edwina (a benevolent T. rex look alike). She plays with all the kids, helps little old ladies across the street, and bakes delicious chocolate chip cookies. Everyone, that is, except Reginald Von Hoobie-Doobie. He knows everything about everything, and he is determined to prove that dinosaurs are extinct. The playful drawings in this one are great – just the image of Edwina trying to screw in a lamppost bulb with her scrawny arms is enough to make you LOL.

- Tea Rex by Molly Idle – When you invite someone over for a tea party, good manners are essential. Particularly if your guest is a lovable, bumbling T. rex! The mayhem that Rex causes is silly and adorable. This one is funny, for sure, but it’s more cute-funny than ROTFL-funny. Still, it deserves a place on this list. (And it also is the first in a series of 4 books, followed by Camp Rex, Sea Rex, and Santa Rex.)
