Hardcover, 32 Page Picture Book, Ages: 5 – 8
This charmingly illustrated seasonal treasury of nature-based crafts, baking recipes, and gardening projects for the fall celebrates the homesteading lifestyle with self-sufficient and eco-friendly fun. ~ From the Publisher
This is a well written and beautifully organized book. It gives kids and parents a chance to enjoy a day ( or days) unplugged and immersed in the wonder of fall. There are more simplistic themes for the younger readers and the book educates without being preachy. Fun facts about all things Fall, from pumpkins and gourds to honey and herbs, with simple yet colorful illustrations that highlight each activity.
I realize this book is primarily aimed at Homesteaders, but if you’re a parent trying to compete with the allure of modern technology in your kid’s lives, here’s a great place to start. The recipes and crafts were broken into simple steps that appeal to the youngest readers and more intricate crafts for the 2nd and 3rd graders. To note – I would echo the admonition about being very careful picking mushrooms – frankly that’s a page I would skip for children this age. An especially appealing fact is that this entire publication is a good choice for the conservation minded as the book is made from %100 post-consumer recycled paper as are all Ivey Kids Books.
Little Homesteader: A Fall Treasury of Recipes, Crafts, and Wisdom by Angela Ferraro-Fanning gets 41/2 stars from this reviewer.
