Unlike most kids, Shailey loves bedtime – because her dad reads stories to her. But then her dad gets a new job and misses too many bedtimes. “You’re fired!” Shailey announces.
The next morning, she puts up a job notice. “Help wanted: Bedtime Storyteller.” The Three Pigs, Snow White, the Gingerbread Man, and other fairytale applicants are interviewed, but no one works out. The final applicant, a familiar-looking elf, is just right, but will he be able to get through a bedtime story without distractions?
This playful twist on fairy tales and bedtime introduces kids to the ins and outs of applying for a job (if that’s something that kids are interested in knowing about?). The plot, which revolves around the job interview process, is simple and straightforward, so it should be understandable for most readers. A bunch of puns and wordplay add to the fun. And there are hilarious fairytale resumes included in the back!
For readers looking for diverse books without an agenda, this would be a great addition to their library. The main characters, charmingly illustrated in a vibrant mid-century style, are Black and the fairytale characters’ skin tones are a variety of peaches and browns. However, the story is not about race, identity, or cultural issues – it’s a sweet, funny bedtime story full of heart. It’s an opportunity for kids to see themselves in a positive (albeit somewhat silly) book. (Personally, I appreciate silly, but if it’s not something you appreciate, be aware that this story can be a bit silly.)
All in all, I enjoyed Help Wanted: Must Love Books. It’s a good book. Kids will like the humor and relatable characters. Some kids might even ask to read it over and over again.
