By the Fan Brothers
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2022
Picture book, 56 pages, ages 4-8
Clouds might be out of fashion, but not to Lizzy. On Saturday, her parents take her to the Cloud Seller in the park. Lizzy chooses a small, ordinary cloud and takes it home. She names it Milo.
Lizzy faithfully follows the directions from the Cloud Seller, giving her cloud plenty of water, walks, and room to grow … until Milo grows so big that there’s not enough space for him in her tiny room. What will Lizzy do? What is the best way to care for Milo? And what will she do when there are no directions to guide her?
Lizzy and the Cloud is another brilliant book from the Fan Brothers. The muted palette with pops of yellow and the quiet, old-fashioned tone wrap you up in a warm, comfortable read. The detailed scenes encourage the reader to sit and stay a while. Subtle humor and wordplay will engage both kids and adults.
I might be biased because I love everything the Fan Brothers do, but I am in love with these illustrations! They’re whimsical, delightfully detailed, and perfectly paired with beautifully sparse text.
Will kids like this book? As a kid, I would have loved this book and would have read it over and over again. (Let’s be honest, I still would as an adult!) However, a kid who likes adventurous stories might not be as entertained. It’s a perfect read for a quiet, chill, or thoughtful story time.
