Magic on the Map: Let’s Mooove (Book #1)
Authors: Courtney Sheinmel and Bianca Turetsky
Random House Books for Young Readers, 2019
eBook, 128 Pages Chapter Book Grades 2-5
Twins Molly and Finn are surprised to learn that their dad has traded the family car for an RV.
But as they learn, this isn’t just any old camper – it can take its riders anywhere in the USA. And so, without warning, Molly and Finn find themselves in Colorado, eating the best cheese they’ve ever tasted and helped stop a dastardly group of cow-thieves.
If there’s one thing this book teaches readers, it’s to avoid getting in an argument with a sentient RV. Using the power of the Internet, the camper whisks Molly and Finn out of their Ohio driveway and onto a Colorado ranch. That’s where they meet Snowflake, the cow with the best milk in the state, the country, and maybe the world. But when a group of “rogue cowboys” kidnap Snowflake and the adults can’t stop arguing long enough to rescue her, it’s time for the kids to save the day.
Along with a rollicking good story, this book is packed with facts about Colorado. And I’m willing to bet most adults (let alone kids) will find something they didn’t know about the Centennial State.
As usual with books in this age range, the emphasis is on story rather than character development. But even so, Molly and Finn are realistic characters (and argue like very realistic siblings) that we can identify with and root for. I’m looking forward to the next installment of this Series.
If you like a good adventure or you think that geography is under-appreciated, check the Magic on the Map books out. They’re sure to appeal to young readers!
