There has been a flowering of more diverse books over the past few years and fortunately many of those have absolutely nothing to do with race or ethnicity.
One of the first children’s books that featured a character of color was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, however, the plot wasn’t about being of color. It was a magically powerful book featuring a kid growing up, playing in the snow, and enjoying being a child.
Not every book that features children of color needs to be about the troubles and tortures of the past or present. This isn’t saying those issues are unimportant, but small children don’t have the capacity for understanding the complexities and unfairness of much of history. It’s more vital that they learn that reading is a pleasure, that quiet moments before bed are about feeling safe and loved, filled with the wonder of a marvelous story no matter the color of the characters.
