Fall is here and snow has already fallen in many parts of the country. Winter has a magical feeling for children and snow, in particular, changes the world into a proverbial winter wonderland.

- Only The Trees Know – by Jane Whittingham – Little Rabbit is tired of winter. When will it be spring? His parents tell him to be patient, but he doesn’t like to wait. A simple, slow-paces story with a not-so-hidden lesson of patience. Lyrical writing and lovely illustrations.
- A Day So Gray – by Marie Lamba – Two friends – one glumly pessimistic and one emphatically optimistic go outside on a winter day. The illustrations are exquisite, the characters, color palette, textures: beautiful.
- Winter Sleep – by Sean Taylor and Alex Morss – An enchanting exploration of wintertime walks, animal behaviors, and intergenerational bonds. The writing, the illustration, the opportunities for learning – even the way the book is bound and printed – is spot on! Highly recommended.
- Snow Horses – by Patricia MacLachlan – It is the very last evening before the new year and two horses pull their sleigh through town, spreading light, and love, and laughter. Without the usual fireworks and raucous celebrations this is a new and unique take with a deeply satisfying calm, joyful children, and reminiscent senior citizens. This is truly an exquisitely delightful book and completely captivating.
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolk – It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling! A beautiful exploration of a father and daughter’s companionable moonlit walk.
- Snow? – by Jo Surman – Two curious little foxes ask their mother, “Why is your fur so warm and thick?” This adorably inquisitive tale is engagingly written, vibrantly illustrated, gorgeously printed, and a delight to read. Kids will identify with the little foxes’ curiosity and their tenacity in finding an answer to “What is snow?”
