Creeping, hopping, zipping
Throughout the redwoods green
Are many different creatures
Who are very seldom seen.
In this rhyming counting book, the reader is introduced to various animals that live in a redwood tree: an eagle, owls, salamanders, and more. Front and back matter enhances the story and provides 6 pages of educational content – that’s 20% of the book! The Explore More sections, one for kids and one for adults and teachers are packed full of learning opportunities.
The story is charming, full of fascinating animal facts. While I love the rhyme pattern and how it sets up anticipation for the next animal to come, the uneven meter does hamper readability in some places, especially when reading aloud.
The illustrations are exquisite and full of hidden things that encourage the reader to look at all the details. Chad Wallace, an award-winning illustrator, is a master at rendering animals and light.
Will kids like this book? Some will love it! It’s particularly suited for curious kids who like nature, animals, and learning about our planet. It has a high read-again factor, as there are new things to find with each reading.
