By Jonathan Stutzman, illustrated by Jay Fleck
Chronicle Books, 2023
Picture book, 52 pages, ages 3-5
Pointy wants to be in the talent show, and Tiny promises to help. Between them, they’ve got a lot of great skills. They’re sure to win, especially with a magician act like their heroes, the Amazing Presto. But every time they practice their grandest trick, to make Bob disappear … “Ta Da!” It doesn’t work. Will they learn how to make the trick work in time? And what will they do when Pointy gets a twisty turny case of stage fright?
The third book in the series, TINY T. REX AND THE GRAND TA-DA! Is about friendship, overcoming problems, patience, and understanding. While it has the same humor and heart, for me, it wasn’t quite as good as the first book, TINY T. REX AND THE IMPOSSIBLE HUG. (Read Our Review Here>>>) But it’s still fun and engaging. Kids will love the story and Jay Fleck’s adorable, brightly colored artwork. (Who am I kidding? Adults will love it too.)
While this is a longer picture book at 52 pages, the story only takes up 44 pages, and it is briskly paced. Aside from the artwork, one of my favorite things about this series is the depiction of a healthy, supportive friendship between opposites, a large herbivore and a small carnivore. Tiny and Pointy are lovable, relatable, and a bunch of fun to read about.
Don’t just read this book – go get the other two in the series. If you like dinosaur books and/or friendship books, you’re sure to love Tiny T. Rex.
Ta-DAAAA! Another brilliant book in the Tiny T. Rex series.
