By Jonathan Stutzman, illustrated by Jay Fleck
Chronicle Books, 2020
Picture book, 48 pages, ages 2-5
It is Tiny and Pointy’s first campout in the backyard. They’ve never slept outside before. Without their nighty-lights, the dark is VERY dark. Even though they’re mighty beasts, they might be a little afraid of the dark. It is hard to be brave when you’re scared of the Crawly-creeps and Nom-bies. But Pointy and Tiny have thought up a secret plan to be brave. So when the dark dark comes, they’ll be ready. Their plan can’t possibly fail. Right?
T.rex-cellent! A very good good sequel.
This follow up to Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug is filled with the same humor and heart. Told entirely from Tiny’s point of view, we get to see how this little Rex faces big fears. It’s something tiny humans can relate to. And it might give them some tips as they face their big fears.
The storytelling in this sequel is just as on point. The words and pictures work together brilliantly. Jonathan Stutzman’s authentically childlike voice makes Tiny come alive. Jay Fleck’s clever use of color and masterful control of value add so much. I’m in love with Pointy’s dino print pajamas and the not-so-subtle gags throughout (their rawr-ing shadows, Tiny & Pointy’s mismatching helmets, and the sister’s nom-bie cucumber mask are especially delightful).
Absolutely recommended for all readers.
Note: this is the second book in the series. If you haven’t read it yet, check out the first Tiny T. Rex book, Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug, along with the upcoming Tiny T. Rex and the Grand Ta-Da! (releases April 2023). There are also two board books: Tiny T. Rex and the Perfect Valentine and Tiny T. Rex and the Tricks of Treating.
Tiny T. Rex and the Very Dark Dark receives five stars from this reviewer.
