Picture book, 32 pages, ages 3-6
When you open a book, you can journey so far–
to the depths of the ocean or a far distant star.
When a girl and boy open a book, a fantastical adventure begins. They encounter a giant, ride on a flying bird/pirate ship, roast marshmallows with a dragon, have tea with merfolk … and the book isn’t even half over yet! Of course, their imaginative adventure inevitably leads them home, safe and sound, ready for the next time they’ll open a book…
Wonder awaits when you open a book.
When You Open a Book is gorgeously designed with exquisite illustrations that beckon the reader to turn the pages. The rhyming text is rhythmic, sweet, and safe. It’s easy and comfortable to read aloud; Caroline Derlatka has an ear for the music of words. At times, the rhymes get a little cliche (“When you hold a book, you hold a key.”) but are always heartfelt.
The star is the artwork. Adorable characters, whimsical animals, and bright pastel hues are reminiscent of the vintage Golden Book illustrations. Sara Ugolotti’s style perfectly compliments the text. Most of the time, her illustrations outshine it. They’re that good.
Will kids like this book? Yes, especially when it’s time to settle down. As a kid, I would have loved reading it before bedtime (or naptime when I was supposed to be sleeping). It’s perfectly suited for a bedtime or quiet time read.
When You Open A Book by Caroline Derlatka receives 4.5 stars from this reviewer.
