You’re here because you love books. We love books too. And there are so many books! As much as we’d love to, we can’t read them all. And with all the choices out there, sometimes it’s the books published by the big publishing houses that get all the attention. That’s why we’re going to be highlighting small publishers that are creating stellar books. The first in our series: Bushel and Peck Books. https://bushelandpeckbooks.com/
Bushel and Peck Books is a small-but-mighty publisher trying to make a big difference. For every book they sell, they donate one to a child in need. How cool is that?
Giving back is what Bushel and Peck has done from the start, even as a teeny tiny team of the Miles family – author/illustrator/designer husband David, co-founder/author wife, and book-loving kid Tucker. Now, almost five years on, their team has grown to six, allowing them to expand production and build an impressive catalog.
Bushel and Peck is passionate about books, which can be seen in the outstanding quality of what they produce. The writing, the artwork, the printing, and binding are all top-notch.
So if you’re looking to support smaller publishers, consider hopping on over to their friendly website and picking up a few books. Here are a few that we’ve been digging:
When You Open A Book
When You Open a Book is a sweet & imaginative picture book, a love letter to the wonder and power of reading. We love the illustrations and think it would be a perfect read aloud at bedtime.
Inner Workings
Their nonfiction books are gorgeous and packed full of learning opportunities. We love Inner Workings and Exoplanets: A Visual Guide to the Worlds Outside Our Solar System.
EXO PlANETS A Guide To The Worlds Outside Our Solar System
NASA has confirmed the existence of over 5,000 exoplanets (planets that lie outside of our solar system), and that number is growing! Exoplanets, the first book of its kind for kids, is a visually packed guidebook to the exoplanets of our universe.
The Little Library of Natural History series is full of fun and fascinating facts. Our Books Children Read reviewers love animals and conservation, so this series is right up our alley! We also love the format, pairing vintage illustrations with fresh and well-organized design. We recommend starting with The Little Book of North American Mammals or The Little Book of Animals of the Arctic.
The Little Book of North American Mammals
The Little Book of North American Mammals, part of the Little Library of Natural History, introduces kids to dozens of North America’s most fascinating creatures with details about their habitats, diets, lifespans, and more.
Gorgeous vintage artwork by some of the world’s most enduring nature illustrators fill this irresistible volume.
The Little Book of Animals of the Artic
The Little Book of Arctic Animals, part of My Little Library of Natural History, introduces kids to dozens of the Arctic’s most fascinating creatures with details about their habitats, diets, and more. Hunt with the mighty polar bear. Dive with the mystic narwhal. Camouflage with the Arctic fox. Adapt, hunt, and survive among some of the world’s hardiest birds, mammals, and fish.
For those who love poetry and classics, The Illustrated Emily Dickinson, The Illustrated Robert Frost, and The Illustrated Edgar Allen Poe would make great gifts.
The Illustrated Emily Dickinson
Poems include “Hope is the Thing with Feathers,” “I’m Nobody! Who are you?”, “A Bird came down the Walk,” “Success is counted sweetest,” and many more. Brief commentary and helpful definitions accompany each poem, making The Illustrated Emily Dickinson among the most accessible―and beautiful―introductions to the Belle of Amherst available.
The Illustrated Edgar Allan Poe
Twenty-five of Poe’s most beloved works are each illustrated with stunning, full-color collage artwork.
Poems include “The Raven,” “The Bells,” and many others. Brief commentary and helpful definitions accompany each poem, making The Illustrated Edgar Allan Poe among the most accessible―and beautiful―introductions to Edgar Allan Poe available.
